Your PNG shows up here as soon as you drop an image.

How it works.

  1. 1

Drop a WebP file, or click to pick one. A screenshot or an image saved from a site both work.

  2. 2

The image is decoded and redrawn as a PNG at its full size, transparency included.

  3. 3

Download the PNG. It opens in any editor, slide deck or upload form.

Why convert WebP at all?

Sites serve WebP because it's small. Save one of those images and you often can't open it where you need it: an old version of Photoshop, a form that only takes PNG or JPG, a design tool, a Word doc.

PNG works everywhere and is lossless, so converting doesn't lose any more detail than the WebP already had. The file gets bigger, which is the price of opening anywhere.

How the conversion works

Your browser already knows how to read WebP. The tool decodes the file, draws it onto a canvas at its real width and height, and saves the pixels as PNG.

Nothing is sent to a server. That's why it's instant, and why it still works if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Questions, answered.

How do I convert WebP to PNG?

Drop the WebP file into the converter above. It turns into a PNG straight away, and you click Download to save it. No signup and no upload.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in the WebP stay exactly as they were.

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses much harder than PNG. A PNG stores every pixel without loss, so the same image usually takes two to five times the space. The picture itself doesn't change.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Only the first frame. PNG holds a single still image, so an animation comes out as the frame the browser shows first.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in this browser tab with the Canvas API. The file never leaves your computer.
