16, 32 and 48 px are the favicon set. Add 256 px for a Windows desktop icon.
How it works.
- 1
Drop a PNG, or click to pick one. A square image of 256 px or more works best.
- 2
Tick the sizes you want inside the icon. 16, 32 and 48 px cover every browser tab.
- 3
Download the .ico. Every size is packed into that one file.
Why an ICO and not just a PNG?
Browsers ask for /favicon.ico before they read your HTML, and older ones only understand ICO. One .ico file can hold several sizes, so the tab, the bookmark bar and the Windows taskbar each pick the size that looks sharp.
Modern browsers also accept PNG and SVG favicons. Most sites ship both: an ICO at the root for the old path, and PNG or SVG links in the head for everything else.
How the conversion works
Your image is drawn onto a canvas once per size, encoded as PNG, and packed into the ICO container with a directory entry for each size. Windows Vista and every current browser read PNG-encoded ICO files.
Nothing is uploaded. The whole thing happens in this tab, which is also why it's instant.
Questions, answered.
How do I convert a PNG to ICO?
Drop your PNG into the converter above, choose the sizes you want inside the icon, and click Download. You get one .ico file with every size you ticked.
What sizes should a favicon.ico contain?
16, 32 and 48 px cover browser tabs, bookmarks and the Windows taskbar. Add 64, 128 or 256 px if the icon will also be used as a desktop or app icon on Windows.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with the Canvas API. The PNG never leaves your computer, and the tool works offline once the page has loaded.
Does a transparent PNG stay transparent in the ICO?
Yes. Each size is stored as a 32-bit PNG inside the ICO, so the alpha channel is kept exactly as it was in your source image.
Can I convert a non-square PNG?
Yes. The image is centred on a square, transparent canvas so it is never stretched. For the sharpest result, crop it square before you convert.
