Why start from SVG
A vector has no fixed resolution, so the 16 px version is drawn at 16 px rather than squashed down from a 512 px bitmap. Edges land on whole pixels and the icon reads clearly in a browser tab.
Keep the SVG too. Modern browsers accept an SVG favicon directly, and it can even switch colours in dark mode with a media query inside the file.
If the SVG looks wrong
An SVG without width, height or a viewBox can render at the wrong size. Open it in an editor and add a square viewBox, such as 0 0 512 512. External fonts and images referenced by the SVG are not loaded, so convert text to paths first.

How do I convert an SVG to ICO?

Do I still need an ICO if I have an SVG favicon?
Usually yes. Safari and older browsers do not use SVG favicons, and many tools still request /favicon.ico directly. Ship the SVG for modern browsers and the ICO as the fallback.
Why does my text disappear in the icon?
The SVG is rendered in isolation, so web fonts it references are not loaded. Convert the text to outlines or paths in your design tool and convert again.
Is the SVG uploaded to a server?
No. The browser renders the SVG locally on a canvas. Nothing is sent anywhere.
