Why WebP for the web
WebP files are usually a lot smaller than the same image as PNG, often a third of the size or less for photos and screenshots. Smaller images mean faster pages, which is what Lighthouse is asking for when it says to serve images in next-gen formats.
Every current browser shows WebP, including Safari since version 14. Keep the PNG around only if you need to support something older.
Picking a quality
80 is a good default: hard to tell apart from the original, and much smaller. Go down to 60 for big hero photos, and up to 90 or more for screenshots with small text, where blur is easy to spot.
Transparency is kept at any quality. Logos and UI images with flat colours sometimes come out bigger as WebP than as an optimised PNG, so check the size readout before you swap.
Questions, answered.
How do I convert PNG to WebP?
Drop the PNG into the converter above, set the quality, and click Download. The WebP is made in your browser, and you can see its file size next to the original before you save it.
Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes. WebP has an alpha channel, so a transparent PNG stays transparent after the conversion.
What quality should I use for WebP?
Start at 80. It usually looks the same as the PNG at a fraction of the size. Lower it for large photos and raise it for screenshots with small text.
Why does the converter say my browser can't make WebP?
Some browsers, Safari in particular, can show WebP but can't save a canvas as WebP. They silently hand back a PNG instead. Open this page in Chrome, Firefox or Edge to get a real WebP file.
Do all browsers support WebP?
Yes, every current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari displays WebP. Only very old browsers, such as Internet Explorer, need a PNG or JPG fallback.
