Markdown table syntax in one minute
A row is cells between pipes. The first row is the header, and the row under it is dashes, one group per column. A colon on the left of the dashes aligns the column left, on the right aligns it right, on both sides centres it.
Tables are part of GitHub-flavoured Markdown, so they render on GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, most docs tools and MDX sites. Plain CommonMark has no tables.
Pipes, line breaks and other traps
A pipe inside a cell would end the cell early, so the generator writes it as \|. A line break inside a cell becomes
, because a real newline would end the row.
Already have a Markdown table that's a mess? Paste it into the import box. The generator reads the cells and the alignment back and writes it out lined up.
Questions, answered.
How do I convert an Excel table to Markdown?
Select the cells in Excel or Google Sheets, copy them, click a cell in the grid above and paste. The range fills the grid, and the Markdown table appears on the right ready to copy.
How do I align columns in a Markdown table?
Use colons in the separator row: :--- for left, ---: for right and :---: for centre. In this generator, pick the alignment from the dropdown above each column.
Can I convert CSV to a Markdown table?
Yes. Paste the CSV into the import box and click Fill the table. Quoted fields with commas or line breaks are handled, and semicolon-separated files from European Excel work too.
How do I put a line break or a pipe in a table cell?
Use
for a line break and \| for a pipe. The generator does both for you when a cell contains them.
Do the extra spaces matter?
No. Markdown ignores the padding, it only makes the source easier to read and review. A table without lined-up pipes renders exactly the same.
