Read as YAML 1.2: on, no and yes stay strings, anchors and merge keys are expanded, comments are dropped.
How it works.
- 1
Paste YAML or open a .yaml or .yml file.
- 2
It's read as YAML 1.2. Anchors and merge keys are expanded and comments dropped.
- 3
Copy the JSON or download it. A syntax error shows its line and column instead.
See what your YAML really says
YAML is easy to write and easy to misread. Indentation decides nesting, a missing space after a colon changes the meaning, and anchors pull values in from elsewhere in the file. JSON has none of that, so converting is the quickest way to check what a config holds.
If a workflow or a manifest behaves oddly, convert it and look at the JSON. A key nested one level too deep is obvious there.
The Norway problem
In YAML 1.1, unquoted no, yes, on and off are booleans. That's how the country code NO turned into false, and why the on: key of a GitHub Actions workflow becomes true in some parsers.
This converter reads YAML 1.2, where only true and false are booleans. In the sample, REGION: no stays the string "no" and on stays a key.
Questions, answered.
How do I convert YAML to JSON?
Paste the YAML into the box above. The JSON shows up on the right as you type. Copy it or download it as a .json file.
Are YAML anchors and aliases supported?
Yes. &name defines an anchor, *name reuses it, and <<: *name merges its keys into a map. The JSON has everything expanded, since JSON has no references.
What about files with several documents?
A file with --- separators holds several documents, like a Kubernetes manifest with a Deployment and a Service. They come out as one JSON array, in order.
What happens to YAML comments?
They're dropped. JSON has no comment syntax, so there's nowhere to put them. Keep the YAML as the source if the comments matter.
Is YAML a superset of JSON?
YAML 1.2 is, for practical purposes. Any JSON document is valid YAML, so you can paste JSON here and get the same data back.
